US drone attack kills 16 suspected militants in North Waziristan

MIRANSHAH: At least 16 suspected militants were killed and 13 others were injured in a US drone attack at Darray Nashtar in district Shawal of North Waziristan, security officials said.
Those killed are suspected to be members of the Hafiz Gul Bahadar Taliban.
Initial reports say the drones fired ten missiles on unidentified targets in Darray Nashtar, destroying nearby residential buildings.
The death toll is expected to rise.
Security officials speaking to AFP said, “US drones fired missiles to target a militant compound, killing three rebels.”
Locals began rescue efforts whereas drones circling overhead caused panic and fear among them.
Earlier, at least nine suspected militants were killed when US drones targeted a vehicle in the Sheen Khwar area on the outskirts of Humzonee village, around four kilometres from Miramshah.
Pakistan has repeatedly criticised American drone strikes in its territory, calling them counter-productive.
Attacks by unmanned US aircraft are deeply unpopular in Pakistan, which says they violate its sovereignty and fan anti-US sentiment, but American officials are said to believe the attacks are too important to give up.

Quetta bomb attack kills one, injures 12: Officials

QUETTA: A civilian was killed and 12 others including three children injured when a car bomb targeted a paramilitary convoy Tuesday in the southwestern Pakistani city of Quetta, officials said.
The explosives-packed car went off after vehicles of the paramilitary Frontier Corps (FC) passed, FC spokesman Murtaza Baig told AFP.
“The militants targeted two vehicles of FC but the remote-control device exploded after our convoy had passed the parked car,” he said.
Police and security forces are frequently attacked in the insurgency-plagued Balochistan province, of which Quetta is the capital.
Senior police official Wazir Khan Nasir told AFP: “The victims of the blast were all civilians who were passing from the area. The toll includes one man killed and 12 others wounded including two women and three children.”
There was no claim of responsibility for the attack but the province, which borders Iran and Afghanistan, suffers from Taliban and local rebel attacks.

Blast at fireworks warehouse kills 2, injures 9

MULTAN: At least two people were killed and nine others were injured whereas many more were buried beneath rubble when a blast ripped through a fireworks warehouse in the Hussain Aghahi area of the city, causing the building and other structures nearby to slowly collapse, Express News reported on Saturday.
Explosions continued in the building, causing a steady fire due to chemicals stored there.
At least eight people were reportedly present in the building at the time of the explosion. Rescue teams reached the scene and began efforts to extract people buried under the rubble whereas firefighters attempted to put out the fire caused by the explosion.
A heavy contingent of police also reached the scene and began efforts to evacuate nearby buildings that were at risk of collapsing.
The injured were shifted to Nishtar Hospital.
CPO Multan reached the scene with his team and informed media personnel that the area SHO had been suspended and assured of action against those involved in letting the banned business continue.
Earlier, four members of a family were injured in a blast at a house used for manufacturing fireworks.

Three killed, 24 arrested as Karachi violence continues

KARACHI: As the spate of unrest continues in the city, at least three people were killed due to incidences of violence while 24 were arrested, Express News reported on Sunday.
Two people, including a woman, were killed in Gadap Town and Orangi Town.
A body of a young man was found in a gunny bag from the Aram Bagh area.
According to East Zone DIG Captain (retd) Tahir Naveed, around 24 people were arrested during police operations in several areas of the city.
Earlier, four people were killed on July 28 and three bodies were found in gunny bags.
Recently, leaders belonging to the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and Awami National Party (ANP) met in Islamabad and discussed the city situation. During the meeting, the leaders decided to tone down rhetoric against each other and make Karachi a better place to live for all ethnicities.
