Backlash fear prompts Christian families to flee

ISLAMABAD: Amid reports of many Christian families fleeing the town near the federal capital in fear of a backlash, President Asif Ali Zardari on Sunday sought a detailed report on the arrest of an 11-year-old Christian girl on blasphemy charges our ADMIN reported .
Rifta Masih – who suffers from Down’s Syndrome – was jailed by the police in Meharabadi village, near Islamabad, on Saturday after being severely beaten up by locals, for allegedly burning 10 pages of the Noorani Qaida.
After the issue was highlighted in the media, Islamabad police registered a case against the imam of the local mosque of Meharabad area near G-11 sector for instigating locals to set the minor girl on fire.
“Investigation is under way and the authenticity of the incident, age of the girl and her motive are yet to be determined,” said the station house officer (SHO) of the Qasim Niazi police station. Instead of trying to contain the situation and allaying tensions in the area through deployment of police, the SHO simply asked the Christian community of the area to run for their lives.
The official revealed that a new FIR has been registered against the cleric and 175 others who he claimed have approached the police with a demand to hand over the Christian girl so she could be set on fire publicly at the main chowk of the area.
Adviser to the Prime Minister on National Harmony Dr Paul Bhatti told The Express Tribune that Rifta would be medically examined. Bhatti said that he has also taken up the issue with religious scholars of different sects, who, after Eidul Fitr, will determine whether Rifta’s act was deliberate or unintentional, since she is only a child.
A cleric, who talked on phone on the condition of anonymity, gave The Express Tribune his version of the incident. According to him, he was teaching Quran to students in the mosque when he heard noises of neighbours beating someone. When he approached the scene, he was told that the girl, who he himself admitted was a minor, had taken away a copy of the holy book from a neighbour’s house and set it on fire.
The cleric vowed to defend “Islam in this world and the next” and claimed that after witnessing the incident he, along with some other locals, approached the police for registration of a case against the girl.
He said when the police remained reluctant to register the case, locals were forced to stage a protest. While the cleric claimed that it was he who approached the police for legal action, the police said that they saved the girl and her family through a timely intervention or the mob led by this cleric would have burnt the girl alive.
SHO Niazi said that if a timely operation was not conducted, locals could have burnt the Christians of the area. Others said that instead of denying the allegations, the Christian population fled the area. Abdur Rehman, 24, who also lives in the area, said that he wanted to kill the girl but police escorted her along with the family.
Reactions
Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Human Rights Cell has expressed concern over the detention of the juvenile Christian girl. The Human Rights Cell proposed that in any such event, law must allow leadership of religious communities and district administration to jointly probe the matter before the registration of a complaint and arrest.
According to the Centre for Law and Justice, at least 200 to 300 Christian families from Meharabadi Jaffar, Sector G-12, Islamabad, have fled after Rifta was accused of blasphemy.
The organisation said that the government has failed to provide security to these Christian families who fled their houses after clerics pledged to attack Christians and evict them from the neighbourhood.

Rehman Malik appointed as interior minister again

President Asif Ali Zardari appointed Senator Rehman Malik as the Federal Interior Minister on Friday soon after he was sworn back into the parliament.
Malik had resigned from his Senate membership after the Supreme Court suspended him from the parliament on June 4 for allegedly running for the Senate in 2009 while still holding British citizenship. He was elected unopposed at a by-election in the same seat for the Senate, or upper house of parliament, which he held prior to his June suspension, paving the way for him to be reconfirmed as a cabinet minister.
The swearing-in ceremony was broadcast live on state television.
The Constitution bars MPs from acquiring foreign nationality.
Documents that Malik submitted to the court failed to convince judges that he had renounced his dual nationality before being elected.
Under the constitution, only members of parliament can hold the rank of cabinet minister.
After his suspension, Malik was swiftly appointed the prime minister’s “advisor” on interior affairs, effectively allowing him to keep his interior ministry job.
The by-election was held in Karachi, although Malik is originally from Punjab.
The Karachi seat won by Malik is reserved for technocrats. Malik is a former official from the Federal Investigation Agency.
The Supreme Court has recently suspended a number of MPs over dual nationality, including Farahnaz Ispahani, an advisor to Zardari and the wife of Pakistan’s sacked ambassador to Washington. She holds dual Pakistani-US nationality.

NRO Implementation: SC orders PM Ashraf to write letter by August 8

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court has given August 08 deadline to Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf to implement its order by writing a letter to Swiss authorities to reopen the graft cases against President Asif Ali Zradari,
A five-member bench, led by Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa and comprising Justice Ejaz Afzal, Justice Ijaz Ahmed Chaudhry, Justice Gulzar Ahmed and Justice Muhammad Athar Saeed, is seized with the case.
Attorney General Irfan Qadir assured the court to make serious efforts to resolve the ongoing crisis. On July 12, the prime minister was directed to write the letter by July 25 and submit the compliance report.
Justice Asif Khosa remarked that President Zardari is our president as well and if he enjoys global immunity then the court is ready to help in this regard.
The AG argued the July 12 court order could not be implemented as it differs from the earlier judgement, adding that a sitting prime minister was removed from the office unconstitutionally.
"The NAB is not accountable before the court and that the NRO order has several flaws in it. The court has no jurisdiction over any NAB official and can not issue direction to any of them."
AG Irfan Qadir also demanded Justice Khosa's removal from the bench.
On this, Justice Khosa said we are also not in favour of sending prime minister home; you can think of ways to come out of this issue.
The court has taken a certain position in this NRO case and it can't be readjusted, it is possible only in politics, Justice Khosa added.
The court order said bridging the gap between two state organs was not impossible and the honourable AG has assured to make sincere efforts to resolve the tussle. There is a false tension among the institutions and the court hoped that by the next hearing a workable solution would be sorted out.
During proceedings, NAB Prosecutor General KK Agha informed the court about the progress made in Adnan Khwaja, Malik Qayum and Ahmed Riaz Sheikh cases.
The NAB official told the bench that the investigation against the out of rule appointment of Adnan Khwaja as OGDCL chief has been completed and the matter is now in prosecution phase, adding that the NAB Board will further decide upon the matter in next 2-3 weeks.
About Ahmed Riaz Sheikh, the court was informed that the decision has been made to file references against three persons within three weeks after the conclusion of probe.
The Attorney General on Tuesday submitted before the court that the prime minister under the constitutional scheme of the country, was bound to act under the advice of his cabinet, but with respect to the implementation of para 178 of the NRO judgement, he did not receive any such advice.
He submitted this in a civil miscellaneous application with the apex court, which was rejected by the SC Registrar Office the same day.
