Targeted attacks: Two MQM activists among seven people shot dead


Around seven people, including two activists of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), were gunned down in the city on Friday.
Farhan Gilani, 28, was shot dead near his house in Makhdoomabad, Orangi Town, said the Pakistan Bazaar police. They claim that Gilani was associated with the MQM’s unit-120. According to the police, two men on a motorcycle opened fire at him with a 9mm pistol. The body was taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. No case was registered. As news of his death spread, tension gripped the area and routine activity came to a halt.
In Nagan Chowrangi, another MQM activist was gunned down while two others were injured, said the New Karachi police. Adeel died on the spot while Faisal and Adnan were taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. According to SHO Ashraf Gujjar, two men on a motorcycle shot at the activist while they were shopping. Adeel, Faisal and Adnan were associated with MQM’s unit 134. A police constable identified as Afzal was killed in firing near the Pak Colony police station. They claim that Afzal was on duty when the incident took place. SSP Farooqi said that Afzal was trying to foil an attempted robbery when suspects opened fire at him. Afzal was a resident of Chakiwara.
Forty-year-old Raheem Baloch, a cable operator was shot dead outside his house in Naval Colony, said the Saeedabad police. The body was taken to Civil Hospital, Karachi. The police claimed that Raheem was not affiliated with any political parties. The body of a barber identified as 30-year-old Shahzad Baloch was found in Yousuf Goth. The police suspect that he was killed over a personal enmity.
In Lyari, the body of a man identified as 50-year-old Iqbal was found inside his house in Nayabad, said the Kalri police. They claimed that Iqbal was a teacher at a government school and was probably killed over personal enmity.
A young man identified as Abbas Raza was shot dead in Petal Wali Gali, said the Gulbahar police. SHO Rizwan Patel said that Raza was the neighbour of Sajid Hussain, an activist of the Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen who was killed near Lasbella Bridge a couple of days ago.
